What Does Halloween Mean To You?

Post by TheHallow1 » Wed Oct 06, 2010 2:19 am

Obviously, anyone who has an account on this site sees Halloween as more than just another Holiday. Explain (in detail if possible) what Halloween means to you if you can even find the words to describe it.

Halloween means so much on so many different levels. To the kid in me Halloween is a once yearly window into eternal youth and euphoric joy. Its Nostalgic quality cannot be measured. To the adult fan in me, its a fun doorway to the dark-side in all of us, kept in perspective that we may milk the poisons of our souls through our fangs of dark and macabre desire that we may be flushed rid of the darkness in time for the most hopeful holiday of them all.
The dark night beckons. Bear us your soul, it whispers. Expose your wicked delights. Join the rest of us on the wind. The dark night beckons and we answer. Sailing into the shadows.

Halloween to me, is the essence of my existence. If it were a place it would be my graceland. If it were a person it would be my soulmate. It is what I love most in the world, what I love most about being alive. Halloween is what I could not live without. It effects every moment of my life, every choice I make. There is nothing about it that I would change. All of my best memories have something to do with it, everything I want to do in the future is absorbed in it. I feel like Halloween was made for me, and I am made of it.
In short, Halloween is EVERYTHING to me. And I remember it every day of my life.

That's a tough question to answer, because it means so many things, but most of all, at least to me, it means fun. I have allways loved going to haunted places, watching horror movies and doing the scary things that are most commonly done on Halloween. Halloween is the time that I can indulge myself in these things more fully, all though I usualy indulge myself anyway. It's a fun time for carving pumpkins, putting up scary decorations, and in my 100 year old house, it's a great time for ghost stories and fires in the fire place.

I could sit here all day and write about this but after all, this is a Halloween web site, and I do post here year round.

Halloween means the one month each year where my obsession doesn't seem weird or bizarre. I think about Halloween all the time, all year long, but any time I mention it people who know me roll their eyes, and people who don't look at me as though I have the mind of a three year old. They just can't understand how a grown man can get excited about what is, for all intents and purposes, a child-centric holiday. But there is something about being able to celebrate the macabre, the embodiment of memento mori, that lights up my inner ghoul. And speaking of lights, this is the time of year when there is less sunlight, so having an orange blaze of electric and candle light is a welcomed antidote to the creeping darkness.

Halloween is about the balance between the bitter fear of death, and the sweetness of youth and life, symbolized by skeletons and chocolate; tombstones and trick-or-treaters. I love the way cars slow down as they pass in front of my house, and children, faces pressed to the window glass, stare in amazement and trepidation at the spooky beasts that populate my front yard. It makes me think of when I was six, and my parents had just split up. It was a hard time period, and there wasn't much to be happy about, but I remember one weekend in October when my brothers and I were staying with my father, and he took us to see a house in the neighborhood where he lived. The guy decorated his yard with white cloth dummies, hanging from trees, hanging from the house, spray painted, and just generally creepy. I had never seen anything like it before, and it created in me a love for the holiday that I've had ever since. I like to think that some of those little faces that pass by my yard might one day be inspired to their own acts of creativity, and that in going all out, I'm not only having a great time, but also inspiring the joy of celebrating Halloween well into the future.

That was very eloquent and very well thought out and written Mac...but be honest. You like to scare people and get candy like everyone else :P LOL

I agree exactly with what you said and I think truthfully Halloween is something those of us that are obsessed with it all year round carry inside and it is a feeling. We look at the trees and leaves differently than other people...a cemetery is also looked at in a different way...the shadows on the wall...the noises you hear...

When you flip through the channels on the TV and there is a paranormal show on you stop to check it out...this whole month I am looking at channels and schedules on TV to record shows/movies I want to keep...weekends are in pursuit of the elusive Halloween props and Pumpkins and Decorations for the house and even if I have no money I go to check them out because I want to immerse myself in Halloween and bathe myself in it's creepy and haunted waters...Halloween is a definite state of mind and permeates all of us in ways other people are never going to understand or get...it is something we hold dear from childhood and even into adulthood and I can only pray that my kids get the bug as I did many many moons ago...
They say that life's a carousel
Spinning fast, you've got to ride it well
The world is full of kings and queens
Who blind your eyes and steal your dreams
Its heaven and hell, oh well

I look at cemeteries and feel like I'm shopping for real estate.
All you that doth my grave pass by,
As you are now so once was I,
As I am now so you must be,
Prepare for death & follow me.

On the grand scale of the universe and time, you're about a burp younger than I am (and Spooky, & Midnight).

I think that as you watch the years slip past you, with no strong belief in the hereafter, you are beginning to feel your own mortality and it's creeping you out.

Don't worry however, that's not the icy hand of death that you feel on your shoulder it's me, creeping up on you with a chainsaw.
All you that doth my grave pass by,
As you are now so once was I,
As I am now so you must be,
Prepare for death & follow me.

Halloween, to me, represents a time of endless possibilities. You can be anyone you want to be. You can decorate any way you want to decorate. The only limits are what you can dream to do are within the bounds of your own imagination.

Most kids are taught that you can make anything you want out of life-- there is no end to a child's imagination. But as we grow older, we tend to lose some of that free spirit. Halloween is so delightfully wonderful because you don't have to be a kid to give your imagination free-reign. In fact, now that I can (usually) bankroll my addiction, I've found it's even more spectacular because I can build air cannons that shoot candy and other things to make the evening a little more memorable and magical for future generations.

I used to think that when I grew up I'd have to give up my imagination, but Halloween provides a niche where, once a year, I can give my imagination free-reign... hand out buckets of candy... and quite possibly give some little kid a fantastic memory that will keep that free spirit alive.

... Plus, I've always had a fascination with the occult mythos-- love ghost stories and all that business. And... I think it's a great way to pay homage to those who've gone on before us...

... but mostly, I just like to build cool stuff. =)
