How's your patch?
Anybody got a pumpkin patch growin'? How's yours doing? Got it all planted? Did you start your seeds early and then transplant the vines, or sow directly into the ground? Getting enough rain? Getting any blossoms yet? Are you growing pie pumpkins, or carvers? Did you plant any of those giant pumpkins?

Re: How's your patch?
I'm a bit late this year, but I am going to try my luck again in early July at planting a pumpkin patch in the hopes that the crows, squirls and rabbits won't be quite as humgry.

Re: How's your patch?
Witchy, have you ever stopped to think that Peter Cottentail and Peter Peter Pumpkin Eater might be the same guy??? (narf narf) I have exactly the same problem, as does everyone else in my down. Very few flower or vegitable gardens can survive the onslaught of crows when the seeds are planted. When the vines, or whatever of the seeds that survived sprout up, the rabbits and the squirls devour them faster then a group of hungry teenagers can devour a pizza. Every year I plant in May. The vines come up, some times I get blossems, but then Peter Peter Pumpkin Eater comes along with a few of his buddies, and that's the end of it. It's the same way for my neighbor who has a fondness for fresh tomatos. She moved all of her gardening in doors, because of the critters and because it's easier to mow the grass.
The crows in Dwight Illinois are also incredible. Late in the evening, and in the very early pre dawn hours of the morning, the sky is just full of them, cawing and flapping. It's like "The Birds."

Yep, some times they can be a problem, but then that's what nature is all about. I suppose if I moved back to Chicago, where the yards are smaller, there are fewer trees, and fewer places for thos animals to nest then it wouldn't be a problem, but I would never give up my beautiful 100 year old haunted house in the first town I lived in as an adult, that I liked.
Besides, I can allways try to grow my pumpkins in flower pots, like my neighbor does with her tomatos if I wanted to keep the cute little critters at bay.

I have never tried to grow my own pumpkins. Don't shoot, don't shoot!
I would love to try it, though.

I would love to grow my own pumpkins but everytime I try to plant anything it dies because of the extreme heat, it just doesn't work for me here.

Re: How's your patch?
The vines do have a tendency to take over your whole yard, so you have to keep your pumpkin patch from getting out of controll. I had one in my yard back when I was a kid and we lived over on 111th and Drake. It was really nice and we did actualy get a couple of usable pumpkins from it, but the vines crept into our neighbors flower garden and sort of took over and she was not very happy about it. To boot, none of the vines in her yeard produced any pumpkins. So I gave her one as a "peace offering," and promised that I would not let my vines invade her yard again.
I never tried to grow a pumpkin in a flower pot, but I would love to. I think it will grow okay as long as you use good potting soil, plenty of water and plant food. I'm not an expert, however.
