A small, cool breeze lifts the leaves into an array of colors, a twirling dance of yellows, reds, oranges, and browns; they twist and fall, only to be lifted up again and softly throwN over here and over there. It came as expected but without warning. It’s 3 o’clock now and the frost from this mornings dew has been long forgotten about. There isn’t one cloud in the sky as the sun does its best to try and warm us for one last time before our mighty oaks shake the last leaf from their branches, leaving them like claws scraping towards the beautiful, crisp, October sky.
I can smell Mr. Robert’s wife baking her first pumpkin cake of the season to the sounds of Roger Miller. The scent of the orange spice pierces through the air as it does about this time every year, throwing my taste buds into a lustful frenzy as my tongue licks my lips. She makes the best pumpkin cakes. Her cakes alone will get her into Heaven.
As I hang the last of my black and orange garland on the front porch, I look over my shoulder to see the un washed faces of boys and girls grinning from ear to ear as they rush the neighborhood. Games of hop scotch and jump rope, jacks and tag, hide and go seek and paper air plane races keep them engulfed in their excitement over the holiday. Some are already sporting their costumes already. Amongst the normal Levis and Reeboks, there is an occasional ghost cut from a mother’s sheet, a witch with her smeared make up, there is even the hint of what was supposed to be a mummy; who will likely have to be re wrapped before this evening’s trick or treating.
Today is a magical day! The wonders of Halloween can be seen swaying in our trees and front porches. Tissue wrapped ghosts and paper plate spiders, construction paper bats and paper bag lanterns, set out for tonight’s festivities.
There’s the smell of Ms. Robert’s cake. Any moment now she’ll be over here to offer me a piece. One piece before dinner won’t hurt.
An hour from now the streets will ring the sounds of moms and dads calling their soon to be little monsters in for dinner. Then after dark our neighborhood will be a celebration of mummies, monsters, vampires, and Indians, an occasional little pumpkin, and an occasional prankster; my house is rolled every year. some times with my help ïÂÅ
This is a magical time of year! HAPPY HALLOWEEN YA'LL!
