Re: ATTENTION "DARK SHADOWS" FANS
I saw it at the Harvest Moon Drive-In, as I said I would, only I took the car because it has a 380 watt stereo in it, and the sound tradk of "Dark Shadows" has to be experience with a decent stereo. I thought it was vastly different from the "Dark Shadows' I know and love, but a very good movie none the less. It was an excelent story, AND it was also funny. Burton and Depp did a fantastic job, and I can't wait until it comes out on DVD so I can add it to my permenant collection.
And I dare say, I have never seen a vampire brush his fangs before.

You know... it occurs to me I don't remember hearing the signature theme music. Did I miss it? Maybe I was too busy groovin to all the awesome '70s tunes?

No, I didn't hear any of the music from the old show. It almost made me wonder if they didn't have the rights to it. Or maybe they just chose to go in a totally different direction. After all, as we've all noted, the tone was completely different from the old show.
So glad you enjoyed the film, Mike!

Re: ATTENTION "DARK SHADOWS" FANS
NeverMore, they did not use the original "Dark Shadows" theme song like they did with the original series and the revival series. The movie opened with the song "Night in White Sattan," by the Moody Blues. There was a little creepy sounding "Dark Shdows" like music at the closing credits, but for the most part the sound track was good old ROCK & ROLL music from my very early addolesence or late child hood, depending on how you look at it. The story takes place in 1972. I t urned 12 in 72.
Murf, when I heard "Dark Shadows" was going to be a comedy, I didn't quite know what to make of it. At first, I was disappointed, but the more I thought about it, the more the idea of a comedic version of the Barnabas Collins story started to appeal to me. So I am very glad I went to see it.

I thought that opening "Nights in White Satin," with the train, was very effective, and Vickie's arriving by train was a nice homage to the pilot episode of the original series. Not to mention the cleverness with the name thing (fans of the original show will get it).

That was pretty clever. That was also the only mention of Maggie Evens. However in the original and revivel "Dark Shadows" tv shows, Victorie Winters was the hottest looking girl in the show IMHO. In this movie, I thought Angelique was the hottest looking.
The song "Night in White Satan" is a great song, but I find it more depressing then I do scary, all though the story behind the Tim Burton version of Victoria Winters was a rather sad one. Insane asylums, shock treatments, nobody believing her. No wonder she decided to change her name.

Re: ATTENTION "DARK SHADOWS" FANS
I saw it last Friday, I enjoyed it for what it was not really familiar with the original show so I had no bias going in other than what I expect from a Depp/Burton production. Seeing Alice Cooper was cool too! They made him look like he did in the 70s.

I almost saw it again yesterday, I was treating my roommate for her birthday but she decided at the last minute she wanted to see The Dictator. Oh gawd!!!! That movie was so dumb! I hate toilet humor. I can't figure out if the movie was aladeen, or just plain aladeen.

ScareView, that's pretty much the way you have to view this new "Dark Shadows" movie. It really is not the "Dark Shadows," that I knew and loved, but it was a very good and funny rendition of the "Dark Shadows"/ Barnabas Collins story. I thought both Burton and Depp did a fabulous job.
Nevermore, I totaly agree about toilet humor. It was funny when I was 6 years old, but it wears thin now that I'm almost 52. "The Dictator" does look like a very dumb, and very unfunny attempt at comedy as well. So I won't be bothering with it. I do actualy plan to see "Dark Shadows" again, and I am definately going to get the DVD when it comes out.

I don't intend to see it again in the theater, but I will for sure purchase the DVD when it comes out.

Well I want to see it on the big screen at least once more before it goes to DVD.

Oh, I'm glad the movie is getting some repeat business. Our family budget is such that we do well to see a movie once in the theater.

Re: ATTENTION "DARK SHADOWS" FANS
This is why I usually only go to matinees. Even then it's around $8 for a movie. Then I find it impossible to watch a big screen movie without popcorn and a soda so there goes another $12 to $16. Another thing I do is go to Costco and get those movie gift cirts for myself. That knocks off a couple of dollars for regular admission. I actually splurged and saw Avengers in 3D at the IMAX. $18.50. Ouch! Didn't really care for the 3D on this one. I just don't think post production is as good. Avatar is still the best 3D movie I've seen.Murfreesboro wrote:Oh, I'm glad the movie is getting some repeat business. Our family budget is such that we do well to see a movie once in the theater.

It was 6 bucks at the Harvest Moon Drive-In, and y ou could either buy your food at their concession stand or bring your own. Some people even brought portable gas barbecues and grilled steaks, pork chops, chicken patties and the like. I went with the theatre pop corn and a hot dog.
They also serve hamburgers, pizza by the slice or you can order a whole pizza from Pizza Hut, and the movie theatre employees will bring it right to your car. There was also Good Humor ice cream products, all the main stay candy treats and Hostess cakes.

Re: ATTENTION "DARK SHADOWS" FANS
I have recently heard there is a drive-in theater in a nearby town. I guess I ought to take my kids to one, just so they will see what it's like. I remember going as a young child, back when they were really popular, not just a nostalgic retro thing like they are now.
We never go to the theater unless it is a matinee, and yes, the tickets are usually eight dollars, unless the movie is in 3-D. I never choose to see anything in 3-D unless I get stuck watching it that way because the 2-D theaters are sold out. And my husband always wants us to get popcorn, candy, drinks, which are very expensive. We have been a five-member family, and are still a four-member one (older son is grown and out of the nest). Going to a matinee at the movie theater pretty much ruins $100 dollars for us.
I never saw Avatar. My older son saw it twice in the theater. He said the story was cliche but that the special effects were dazzling. Because I didn't want to pay to see it in the theater, I never saw it at all. I figured, on DVD, all I would be getting was the story, and he said that was predictable.
