I'm no ecconomist either, so it's hard to say, but it certainly doesn't look good. Additionaly, the debt for the recent war in Iraque and Aphganastan will undoubetedly add a staggering figure to the national debt, which will all be the reason why the Federal Reserve will pring more and more "funny money," just like the wy it happened in Germany during the Weimar Republic. That disaster lead to inflation so bad that a whold wheelbarrow full of Reich Marks couldn't buy a loaf of bread. The depression that followed lead to the rise of Hitler.

Yeah, what happened in the Weimar Republic was an inflationary depression, which is very scary and possibly where we could end up, if things get as bad as possible.
The depression the US experienced in the '30s was a deflationary depression, sort of the opposite. My mother said you never even saw money. It just wasn't around. That was terrible, too, but I --think-- it may be easier to pull out of that kind of depression. In a deflationary depression, money buys a whole lot, if you can get it.
And my mother (who was somewhat uncharacteristically no fan at all of FDR's) always maintained that it was WWII, not governmental policies, which got us out of the 1930's depression.

Your mother has a point. When we mobilized for War, that put a lot of people back to work. The reson, however for the "deflationary" depression as you call it, is that as you pointed out there was a mondy shortage. A big part of the reason for that is that money was on the gold standard, and ther wasn't enough gold in the treasury to back up any additional printed money. That's why it was worth so much more. Now a days, there wouldn't be enough gold to put us back on the gold standard, but we should be put on some kind of a precious metal or diamonds or jewels standard so the dollar will actualy have something to back it up.

I agree. It worries me that we have so much paper money being printed, and that's all it is--paper.

That's what happened in Germany prior to the rise of Hitler. People were lugging around wheel barrrels full of paper currency, and it couldn't buy a loaf of bread. It was totaly worthless. Litteraly not worth the paper it was printed on, or the ink used to print it.
iHaunt, I didn't get it. I think there's a problem with your link.

That's why I started buying silver some time ago. In case the dollar collapses. I was going to buy gold but I waited too long and prices started skyrocketing. I would rather have smaller valued pieces anyway. I got a lot of silver which I can use to buy bread or whatnot after the collapse. Pre-64 coins mostly but I bought a bunch of 1 ounce slugs too. If there's no collapse I could always sell the silver, prices have pretty much doubled since I started buying. Interestingly, it's getting hard to walk into a coin shop around here and buy silver. I'm not the only one worried about the collapse of the dollar. I had to buy my last batch of coins off the internet.
