Glad to see such a tight group of people all with the same love. Wish I would have been here years ago. Maybe one of you guys will be able to help me build a steampunk costume I have to do for this year. Any advise.
PS Do I have to post this somewhere else

Spike your hair, dye it purple, and carry a teapot?

Yes I think they may expect more than a teapot from me. Problem is I don't have skills suitable to build the costume thats in my head.

Pierce your nose, wear a Sid Vicious t-shirt, and buy a portable sauna?

Woo! STEAMPUNK RULES!
For some ideas, I recommend looking at various photos of existing Steampunk costumes.
HCC Cosplay did some GREAT steampunk costumes:

(The guns are distressed NERF guns and things)
There's also the League of S.T.E.A.M:

They have some great steampunky videos....
Also check out steampunk band Abney Park:

Steampunk movies (I can think of off the top of my head):
City of Ember
Wild Wild West
Steampunk-ish video games:
Bioshock
Steampunk takes a lot of elements of Victorian Costumes... spats... goggles... top hats... bowlers... etc. Some really cool stuff is out there. I hope you can take what you see and put together a good costume.
I was going to do Steampunk for Halloween this year-- even had plans for a costume... but a lack of fundage prevented that plan. Still trying to convince my husband to even let me do Halloween this year after what happened last year.... I think we'll bust out the Mad Science gurney again because I already have all the stuff (and we lived in a gated community and had a whopping 5 ToTers that year.)
.... what's the costume in your head? Steampunk makes it easy to piece something together.

The gates are there to annoy residents... and Halloween aficionados. =)

There was a gatehouse, but it was never manned... don't know if it's still that way, I moved out over a year ago now... but I imagine it's still unguarded. I personally think gated communities are a joke.

No, but have you watched Haven? It's based on a Stephen King story and is turning out to be pretty watchable.

If you have a recorder it might be worth the space to try it once.
