I simply don't buy into bonfires being bad for the environment, because the biggest polluter is the car and electrical generation. People burned wood for countless thousnds of years to do their cooking and to heat their homes. Charcole was also used for many years, and there were never any real major problems. So I don't feel bad at all about having a good rip-roaring bonfire once in a while, and you can bet that if I can get enough wood together, I'll be doing just that next October.

They were talking about the giant bonfire down in the Gulf of Mexico that BP had to set to burn off some of the oil that's leaking all over the place.
