Safest (and possibly coolest!) way to light your pumpkins...

Do you have a special way to carve a pumpkin?

My dad got me one of those color changing ones in October 2006. I like a real candle in the Jack O Lantern best because it has the old Halloween burning pumpkin smell that I love and nothing fake can replace something real.

We always just use a couple of tea lights in ours.

I am going to try putting a sparkler in a pumpkin. Will only last a few seconds. But I bet it will look cool! :D

I was looking at LED tea lights at the store the other day to use in place of the tea candles or other candles. They have watch batteries (or that type) in them so they don't burn and were pretty inexpensive. I didn't buy any though. ;-)

One year it was a little windy, and it kept blowing out my candle on my outside pumpkin, so I used a regular old flash light instead and it worked fine. I am a bit of a traditionalist when it comes to candle lit pumpkins, but I do sit inside the house, and if a squirl or something knocked over my pumpkin that could be a disaster, so perhaps I'll use a glow stick instead for the outside pumpkin, and candles for my inside pumpkins.

I use the battery operated tea lights for the most part - because they look like real candles....... I also have a couple of the larger lights that we have picked up over the past few Halloweens - I think Pumpkin Master made them - the change colors and look really neat. Surprisingly enough though - we don't go thru a lot of batteries - most of our batteries (little watch batteries) have lasted more than one Halloween and we use them almost every night.

I've used electric christmas tree lights in those Funkins. You know, those artificial pumpkins you can carve. I like those pumpkins because I can carve those really delicate designs that take hours, and keep it for years.

I've used glo-stix, but the punk teens seem to always steel them! ( I am a parent of one!)

I have several of those battery lights with 5 little bulbs that rotate on and off. Pretty cool because in the dark it looks like a flickering candle. I use those at my party. Mine take 2 "C" batteries and I get about 2 years partying out of them.

2 years ago I bought these little oil filled candles. They are about 3" tall and are filled with clear lamp oil. I have burned them for hours!!! They are still about 1/2 full. I got them a seasonal Halloween store one year.I Think they were about $1.00 each. Last year they had them at Wal-Mart too. They are great if you like real flames because they burn forever and are almost impossible to be blown out from wind. BAD idea if you have little kids or pets that may knock them over. The would keep burning where a candle may go out in the fall!

Shanda - I use the Funkins too - I get mine at Michaels - I think they look more realistic than the ones at A C Moore. I do it for the same reason as you - my heart breaks at the idea of having to get rid of a pumpkin that I have spent HOURS carving on. Some of my Pumpkins are about 5 years old now and they still look great. Last year - we used some of the necklace style glow sticks to weave inbetween things on our Pumpkin Cart. I like the idea of candles - I love how they look but my concerns about fire hazards just keep me from putting them in my real pumpkins. But, I do have pumpkin oil lamps... :D

The Funkins are awesome, if you get them right at the beginning of the season at Michaels they are really affordable...the white ones are my favorite.

I subscribe to Michaels news letter and so they send me coupons in my email (A C Moore does too) so when I get a 40% or 50% coupon - I go and pick one up.... I have a Pumpkin addiction - I just worked on some of the white/cream colored ones last weekend - I used some of the rub-ons from the scrapbooking section to decorate and put phrases on to my pumpkins - I am going to spray them with polyurethane this weekend. They turned out really pretty - well - I think they did.

Rub ons. Hmm. Smart. I think I'll try. I have never used the white Funkins!

I have used battery operated lights for my outside pumpkins at times because of high winds, but I prefer TRADITIONAL candles to light them personly.

My grandma is afraid of fires, and one year I was stuck putting a flash light in my pumpkin. Bleh. It was totally lame.
I might order one or two of them and give them a try this year. Maybe. Depends on my budget. I think the colored one looks cool so I might get one of each if I decide to get one, so I'll have a traditional looking one and a colorful one.
This probably seems crazy, crazy, a graveyard theory,

We just use tealights in ours. Never had a problem.
