Did you try Black Pearl on this version of phpBB? Didn't work?

Yes. 3.0.0 was released fall of 2007. 3.1 October 2014. There were point releases up to 3.0.12 in between, but 3.1 was a big update for them. Mobile/responsive etc.

It isn't available for 3.1 and the author doesn't have plans to update as of now.

I haven't found any other suitable themes to try. I am sure the numbers available will grow over time.

I am getting used to it too. There are some things I really like much better, notably the speed and reliability so far.
