We just got some more snow yesterday. The really funny part though is that someone posted something on Facebook that I thought was absolutely hilarious, yet true. Especially since being here in Virginia they close school for something as simple as being freezing cold. When I went to school in New York, the cold itself was no excuse for closing school. I'll share this here so everyone can have a good laugh:

Sometimes it felt like it took more than that just to close school in New York. A snow day was truly something to celebrate when it did come around. I think the teachers and staff didn't like having snow days because they'd miss out on their Spring vacation. After all, I heard they liked going to Myrtle Beach. :P I never got to really travel when i was a kid, so I didn't care.

So when I overhear that schools close down in Virginia I'm thinking what the heck you guys? Are you a bunch of wimps or what? XD LOL

That's a nice picture Andy. How about you be a good sport and share some of that weather with the rest of the States! XD

DOH! I just heard the weather report for the rest of the week. They're saying we may have treacherous jacket conditions by the end of the week, dropping all the way to the high to mid 60s. May as well make the best of it and head to the mountains on Saturday, do a little snow skiing. Sposed to be warm again Sunday so I may go to the beach and soak up some sun. Water is too cold for a local to go in. I'll just sit there in awe at all the tourists brave enough to go in.

My job here is done (got to justify the prices Andy and I pay to live here).

This morning I awoke to some residual moisture on the sidewalk from a devastating sprinkling overnight!

The forecast calls for up to 0.70" possible, over the next 24 hours!

Really I shouldn't kid or god will smack me upside the head.

Serious! I should quit kidding. One of these days we are going to get a couple flakes of snow and we're gonna look worse than Alabama.

Nevermore, I like that "free coffee on the porch" offer for folks trudging through the snow. What a super nice thing to do!

I recall something similar during the heat wave last summer when people left big pet bowls full of water outside for people walking their dogs.

Very cool thing to do.

Our middle TN winter has been brutally cold, but we haven't seen one flake of snow stick to the ground. That disappoints me, since I actually love to see at least one snowfall during a winter, but it doesn't always happen around here.

The cold weather has been dangerous (not now, but last week, and a week or so earlier in the year). We have had actual air temps in the single digits with wind chills way below zero. No one here is prepared for cold like that. And our schools didn't shut down, since there was no snow or ice on the roads. After three or four days, the heating systems were failing in the school buildings. My daughter told me her teeth were chattering so in math class that her teacher asked her if she were OK, and all she could say was, "I'm cold." In another class, the teacher had a thermometer that read 58 degrees. She said that classroom was warm compared to the one where her teeth were chattering.

Up in Nashville, my older son's car died while he was at work. It took him almost a week to get it home and started with a new battery. Cars were dying all over Nashville.

So we have had all the unpleasantness of winter with none of the beauty of it around here.

I can't believe the schools around here shut down again today. We got a bit of rain today, but that was it. Everyone was afraid of freezing rain though, but it didn't really get that cold nor did the rain freeze. Some water spilled over from small ditches, but that was it. I honestly don't see why they insist on closing school so much.

I wonder how cold the one classroom was Murf. It must've been pretty cold.

I don't know, but I'm grateful that our cold now is more normal for our area, like, 30s.

I know folks from the North can never get over how fearful we Southerners are when it comes to snow and ice. Part of it is that we really don't know how to drive in that stuff. I have known of people dying, actually dying, because of two inches of snow on the roads. Economically, we don't invest in all the equipment--plows, salt, etc.-it takes to clear roads, since we don't get so much snow. I mean, we have some of that stuff, but not nearly as much as the folks in the snow-belt do. I have known of snowy winters around here when TPTB literally ran out of salt for the roads. Since I have never lived farther North than Virginia, I don't know what snow is typically like in the snowier areas, but down here, we usually get ice first, and sometimes, nothing but ice. That makes a difference, too.

You also need to remember that if schools are closed, they might have been closed for the whole county. If you live in a town or city, your streets might be A-OK, but the buses have to run over the rural back roads. Some of them can be quite treacherous. There have been many times when our schools closed here, and the students in town could have gotten around just fine. But those in the rural areas of the county would have been endangered.

There is also an economic consequence to the schools if they stay open, but many of the students stay home. My husband, who teaches in the public schools, can explain this better than I can. But the money for the schools is allocated according to average daily attendance, and if they have a day, or several days, when students just don't come in, their budgets take a hit. This means that in our area, if the county schools close, the city schools (which are a separate system) often close as well. Families who have several children might have one or two in the city schools (grades k-6), and one or two in the county schools (all the high schools and most middle schools). This was true of us when our kids were younger. Often, if some kids in the family are staying home, all of them stay home. That affects the annual daily attendance and, in consequence, the school budget for the next year. So the city will sometimes opt to close even though it doesn't really need to, if the county closes.

This last snow was a nightmare in Atlanta and surrounding areas. It's raining and in the 40s now. I hope that's all we get the rest of the year :!: :!: :!: :!: :!:

Our drought has put us in a suspended autumn. There's no rain or wind to bring the leaves down.

I would have thought that school districts would lose money if they did close as opposed to staying open. You do have a point that school districts around here cover entire counties in the more rural areas and there are tons of mountains with lots of deadly twists and turns, while in New York, it's all by town zoning limits. (I actually felt car-sick going around those curves. There's curves in and around New York's hills sure, and I'm not a city girl by any means, I lived in rural upstate New York but their curves can't hold a candle to the mountain curves here...not unless I wanted to pay a visit to the Adirondack's but I'd never been there myself.) The thing is, I guess two inches of snow doesn't seem like that big of a deal to me if the plows can get out and push it off. I would honestly think though that anyone with common sense wouldn't drive like a maniac even if there is just a little snow on the ground, if there is snow, there's bound to be ice as well. Of course, that said, they salt the roads really good in New York, and all the rust you see on the cars up there is evidence of that, because it eats at our cars. (Not only that, but stay off the mountains!)
Now, today I would definitely say would be a good day to close school, but today we also got snow that would be comparable to a New York snow storm. I did hear that our county's school has got chains for their bus's tires, but I haven't heard of anyone actually using them. I think a bus would have an easier time getting through than a car would.
We do actually have plows too and equipment that would take care of the snow. Now I can understand if there aren't any plows or anything to take care of the snow, but there is. I just saw a plow go out today. Now in my state, if the plows can get out, there was school and that was the general rule.

I remember one winter day when I was in high school where my school was the only school in the entire listening area that was open. And for the most part the schools are not out in the country. Everybody was not happy that day at school.

Well we made it through another snow/ice storm here in the Atlanta area. I was forced to remain on duty at my department since Tuesday afternoon. We slept on cots and sleeping bags while pulling 12 hour shifts. I drank enough coffee to own Columbia, and I ate enough donuts to get Christmas cards from Krispy Kreme and stock options.

For the most part it was okay. Stupid Yankees don't realize we don't get snow here. We get ice. Ice cannot be driven on regardless of where you grew up. Had a dipstick from New Hampshire flip his Subaru over directly in front of me last night. Thankfully he had on his seatbelt and his airbag deployed. Apart from some bruises and be scared half to death he was alright. He thought since his Subaru had all wheel drive he could drive on ice.

I told him that an M-2 Bradley Armored Fighting Vehicle would have trouble around here. People forget that Atlanta is the beginning of the Appalachian mountain range and is very, very hilly!

Looks like I'll get to finally go home tonight at 11pm. About freaking time!
