What is it about Halloween that you enjoy?
For me, it's not necessarily the day itself, even though it is fun, but just the whole time of year in general. Where I am from, it really starts to cool off in late September and October, and it's definitely a relief from the summer heat. Also, I am a Football fan and the autumn is when it picks up again. I was also very blessed to have an awesome childhood, and Halloween just reminds me of it. Not to mention the color changes of the leaves is pretty awesome. October is by far my favorite month of the year. Oh, and I enjoy going to haunted houses! How about you?!

I love the whole season too, though we don't get much of the weather change in our corner of the country.

Re: What is it about Halloween that you enjoy?
You highlighted a number of features of the season that I love. Namely, the nostalgia, weather change, leaves, and, of course FOOTBALL!
To answer your question in my own way:
For me the season brings an intangible aura in which the impossible seems possible. In the cooling evenings of Autumn, a sort of spooky magic is adrift, that of the imagination.
Solely in October, if you squint hard enough, you can almost see the fleeting silhouette of a witch gliding across the moon; if you listen close enough, you can almost discern a lonely howl of solitude, filling the offbeats of distant chirping crickets.
Something about the warm, sun filled afternoons shining upon pumpkin patches and scarecrows fading to the glowing faces of jack-o-latnerns smiling through starry chilly black nights allows that part of my mind, the one I keep under lock and key all year, to sincerely question, if only for a moment, "was that just the wind?"
It's the only time of year, as an adult, that I seem to have the ability to let my imagination run free, to be unleashed to create in fantastical ways that are impossible to muster across the rest of the year. As you said, it takes me back to all of the wonderful Halloween memories I enjoyed as a kid.
During October, most of my "real world" worries seem far less important than carving a jack-o-lantern. I think that, in itself, says it all.
Off topic, but who are your football teams? For me: NFL: Redskins NCAA: Virginia Cavaliers

Oh my goodness. Redskins? Four words for ya my friend...HOW BOUT THEM COWBOYS! Haha! Oklahoma Sooners are my collegiate team. I actually like RG3, but I hate he's in our division. I have some family that went to Baylor and live close to Waco so I've always liked him.Big_Guh wrote:You highlighted a number of features of the season that I love. HAIL TO THE REDSKINS! How can one not like RGIII, he's such a dynamic player, and an even better person away from the field. I can certainly see why you'd dislike having him in the NFC East, however! Here's hoping his recovery is as ahead of schedule as we are hearing!vrb8919 wrote:Oh my goodness. Redskins? Four words for ya my friend...HOW BOUT THEM COWBOYS! Haha! At least you're not a Virginia Tech fan. They are even more loathsome than you Cowboys.

Re: What is it about Halloween that you enjoy?
Love your poetic post, Big Guh!
As I've said many times on these forums, to me Halloween is the great holiday of imagination. I also just love autumn and the month of October, which is the height of the autumn. I guess I have a bit of Celtic blood in me, because something in me just wants to believe in magic, and Halloween is all about that.
As for football--I am not a <deleted> sports fan, but we pull for the Tennessee Titans around here (something that hasn't been too easy to do in recent seasons). My husband and I both attended Vanderbilt, which is not known for its amazing football team, although they are getting better under Coach Franklin. UT is supposed to be our arch-rival, but we pull for UT in years when Vandy is out of the running and UT is still in the hunt. I grew up in Mississippi, so I pull for Ole Miss for sentimental reasons. Also because of Ole Miss I am a fan of the Mannings in general and will pull for whichever team any of them plays on.
My mother was from Arkansas, and I spent all my childhood summers & Christmases up there, so I have a soft spot for the Razorbacks. My husband and I lived in Texas as newlyweds, so we love the Texas teams; but we also lived for nearly ten years in Virginia, where both our sons were born, so we pull for various VA teams, too. I have to say, though, that if the Redskins were playing the Cowboys, we would probably root for the Cowboys.
Basically, if I am watching football on TV, I pull for whichever team is closest to home, which for me generally means, whichever team is Southernmost.
ETA: Oh my goodness! I can't believe anything I wrote got deleted! It's funny, I used a hyphenated adjective that starts with the initials h-c, which I guess is sometimes applied to naughty things. However, I was applying it to sports. Let's just say, I don't consider myself an avid sports fan.

Haha! Well can we at least agree to dislike the Eagles?!
All great answers guys!

Vandy is a beautiful school, in a great location. This past fall I attended the Vandy-UT game, and was happy to see Vanderbilt win in CONVINCING fashion!Murfreesboro wrote:Love your poetic post, Big Guh!

Yes, we can find common ground through our shared dislike for the Eagles, and our love for Halloween!
I'll eventually forgive you for choosing such an unsavory team to support!

Thanks for your kind words about Vandy, Big Guh. We love Vanderbilt and Nashville, too. (We also have a current connection there, as our older son earned his BA there in '11 and is currently in the graduate program in mathematics.)

I like the change in season and cooler weather for one thing.
I like best the costuming.

One year a vampire, one year a warlock and one year a Duchess in a beautiful dress.
In 2012 I was a Marquis. In 2013 I will be Mother Bates.
Well, that sums it up.

Re: What is it about Halloween that you enjoy?
There are so many things about Halloween that I like, they're almost too numerous to list here. It's not just Halloween, but the entire month of October. I like carving pumpkins. I like the childhood memories of past Halloweens. I love ToT candy, Taffy Apples and other Halloween treats. Horror movies, haunted attractions, and a whole host of other things.
I guess the reason why Halloween is my favorite holiday is because it's fun for everyone.

Re: What is it about Halloween that you enjoy?
I agree. Halloween is and for me, allways was a time that I could let my imagination run wild. I particularly love a good scare during the Halloween season. That's why every October I screen "The Blair Witch Project." No matter how many times I see it, I allways see or hear something that I didn't hear or see the previous time. I usualy screen it right before I go to bed for the night. Hearing all the noises that my old house makes sort of puts a lot of scare into the Halloween season.
October is also pretty much the last month that I can do alot of motorcycle riding. My Midnight Halloween Motorcycle Ride is pretty much my "fare well" to decent motorcycling weather until April or early May of the next year. I do ocassionaly ride between October and May when the weather permits, but those are very rare treats during that time period. October is also a great month for 'haunted road trips.' Due to medical bills and other unexpected expenses, I wasn't able to do much traveling last October, but I am optimistic about next October. Of course, I don't limit myself to October to go on a 'haunted road trip.' Spring and Summer are also great times to visit abandoned and supposedly haunted places.

Re: What is it about Halloween that you enjoy?
Halloween is the only holiday I know of where you don't have to act your age! =)
I love the excuse to dress up and not be a dork (because everyone is dressing up). I enjoy using my imagination to generate fun and amusing ways to pelt... I mean "provide" children with candy. I like the costumes, the cooler weather, the carving and the creativity that the holiday inspires. It's just all-around fun.
