Rotten Pumpkins

Do you have a special way to carve a pumpkin?

Rotten Pumpkins

Post by Rising Dead Man » Tue Oct 11, 2011 4:39 pm

I look at a pumpkin at Walmart, and it has a part on it growing moldy and rotting. The same thing just happened with a pumpkin I bought later. Today I found a rotting wound and black and white mold and fungus growing on the back and bottom. Anyone else get this?

I something similar happen to me several years ago--my pumpkin looked fantastic when I bought it. I bought it probably a week to ten days before Halloween and then on the day I went to carve it, the inside was totally black! It was disappointing and puzzling for sure because the outside still looked pristine--there was absolutely no indication that the inside was gross. I think this might just happen from time to time. At least you could see the rot on the pumpkin before you bought it.

I didn't see pumpkins at Wal-Mart. I only buy pumpkins at the farm. ;)

I've never bought any at Wal-Mart and I definitely won't now. I usually just pick mine up at the grocery store. I'm going to wait another week or so before I pick mine up--I want the really ugly and deformed ones that nobody else wants :) It'll add to the eerieness of the pumpkin patch this year.

I have bought at both groceries & at WalMart. There have been years when my pumpkins rotted, but I never thought of them as coming from one store or another. I just blamed my warm Southern climate! I always wait until after Oct. 20th to buy, so I am less likely to have that problem. And you are right, the misshapen pumpkins can make some of the most interesting jack-o-lanterns!

You guys would love the Pacific Coast Highway this time of year.

Open bed trucks haul pumpkins from the coastal farms up and down the coast and there are splattered casualties all over the roads from the ones that bounce off of the trucks.

It's a horror show I tells ya!

'The Great Pumpkin Massacre of the Pacific Coast Highway!'

I had a pumpkin last year that ended up turning mouldy & soft on the bottom after a few days of purchase. It didn't affect my usage of it though. I had bought that from (ASDA) Walmart over here.

That happened to us this year. My roommate was gutting the pumpkins, she opened one up and it was already fuzzy inside with mold and had maggots in it. She's such a wimp! I grabbed it, held my breath and scraped it clean. It actually held up pretty well after carving.

You guys are stronger than I am--I wouldn't have it in me to scrape out black furry mold and if I saw maggots in my pumpkin, it would take every ounce of strength I had NOT to have projectile vomit
