Re: Jack O'Lanterns
I draw a new pattern every year-- lately they've all been werewolves because I know a guy who asks me to draw him a new werewolf pumpkin pattern every year.
I started putting my patterns and carvings up at my DeviantArt account:

You're free to download and use any of my patterns. I always carve my new patterns the first year and post them for public use the following year.
If there's a pattern you'd like me to draw, feel free to make suggestions-- though I'm out of drawing time for 2011.

I am not super creative, although I have done patterns in the past. I like to stick to faces and make them spooky. Murfreesboro, sorry to hear about your kitty. I think a pumpkin tribute is a nice touch.

I'm not good at drawing at all, however my wife is going to attempt drawing her own patterns this year & we'll pick the best one to carve into a Jack O'Lantern!

I usually do my own thing but I like looking at designs. I'm not opposed to them! These are from the past 2 years. My husband did Sam from Trick R Treat in the first photo.

Re: Jack O'Lanterns
Hey Jack Skellington--Zombie Pumpkins has a fantastic Freddy pattern that I carved last year (in case you don't already have one). And as for the artificial craft pumpkins, I think they are great. They are all I use anymore simply because I feel like I can do more with them (and I can keep them forever). I have yet to lose an intricate design because of collapse with one of these. I get mine at Michaels. It's best to grab them when they are on sale though because they can be a little pricey. I also prefer them to the Funkins. In my opinion, unless you are doing a shaded pattern, the Funkins suck because they are insanely thick and kind of tough to carve through. That said, you can still do shaded patterns on the Michaels craft pumpkins.
I'll be carving a number of my little darlings this year to go along with the dozen or so from years past, but I think my star this Halloween will be a shaded Headless Horseman from the movie Sleepy Hollow. I'm going to use a black light to illuminate it to give it an eerie look.

Jack Skellington wrote:Just out of curiosity, what are the acrylic pumpkins like? Do they look good?Morticia wrote:Murf that is what I have been thinking of doing as well. Buying the fake pumpkins and carving my favorite stuff into them, maybe one a year.Murfreesboro wrote:Me, too, Morticia. I went crazy for the patterns for several years there, but I've cut back on that. I still do patterns for the acrylic pumpkins, which I can save from year to year, and for my last, Thanksgiving pumpkin (I carve a turkey design into my last pumpkin of the season for a centerpiece while my Thanksgiving turkey is baking).
I was just remembering that, last year, I bought a white pumpkin and carved a "Jack Skellington" face into it. I think I'd seen that in a magazine. I'll probably do that again this year. Sometimes I also collect leaves from the yard and use them as stencils for smaller pumpkins.
Yes they do! We got our funkin a week or two ago. We've picked a pattern but haven't embarked upon carving it yet.
I might give one a try this year along with the real ones.

Re: Jack O'Lanterns
Thanks Morticia & Pumpkin56.
I live in England so I won't be able to use Michaels but i'll look around everywhere for one this year. I've never looked for them before but we have plenty of craft shops that i'm sure will sell them.
I haven't got my Freddy pattern yet so i'll have a look at Zombie Pumpkins then. I've seen one on another site so i'll have a look & compare them both.
Thanks again!

Re: Jack O'Lanterns
I just finished carving the Funkins for my buddy's hardware store. They turned out OK but don't really care for carving those artificial pumpkins. Now my roommate and I have to carve 40 real pumpkins for the haunted pumpkin patch that starts at 4:00pm tomorrow. Wanted to start them tonight but I worked too late. I just hope she doesn't get too stressed out and go Michael Meyers on me.

Good luck Nevermore! I think you can do it. Have someone gut the pumpkins while you carve

Thanks for the encouragement guys. We got 30 of them done before my roommate had to take them to the location. She did most of the gutting. Sure looked like she was thinking of her ex while she was doing it. Such vigor! She was quite proud of the pumpkin prisoner carving she did. The event goes on all weekend so I'm gonna carve the rest tonight while eating manicotti, drinking some beers and listening to old Dr. Demento Halloween shows. A lot of the pumpkins were already going bad so I don't expect them to last till Monday.Jack Skellington wrote:They look good NeverMore. Good luck on carving the 40 Pumpkins.
Hey Jack, you may especially like the Jack Skellington carving we did. I was short on white spray paint so a lot of the orange showed through but that just added to the effect. I also placed the pattern so a giant scar on the pumpkin went right across the face. This one looks better in daylight than it does lit up in the dark.
