Tealights - very small candles - they can be the real deal with a flame or you can even get battery operated tealights. That is what I use in my pumpkins.... Some of the battery operated even have the colored bulb so that you get a real candle appearance - flicker included.

I've seen these and they do look pretty sweet.. i'm just a traditionalist and i like the old flickering of the candle
Last night 'twas witching Hallowe'en
Dearest; an apple russet- brown
I pared, and thrice above my crown
Whirled the long skin; they watched in keen;
I flung it far; they laughed and cried me shame
Dearest, there lay the letter of your name!

I use Christmas lights in mine. Cut a small hole in the back, toward the top so you don't see the light, and poke the bulb through. You can use different colors for different effects. Just unscrew the bulbs you're not using if the pumpkins are placed too far apart. Wrap electrical tape around the unused socket in case some little kid gets an idea. You can even get flicker flame bulbs to simulate a real candle effect.
If the carving has small holes in the eyes I'll sometimes poke those small Christmas lights through from the inside so the pumpkin has glowing red, or whatever, eyes. You'll may have to hide the extra bulbs since a lot of those strings do the 'one goes out... they all go out' thing. I usually wrap electrical tape around the bulbs if they don't get too hot. Newer strings don't usually get that hot.
I probably should think about coming up with an LED solution since those are all the rage these days.

Just came across a picture I took many years ago. Pretty neat effect.NeverMore wrote:If the carving has small holes in the eyes I'll sometimes poke those small Christmas lights through from the inside so the pumpkin has glowing red, or whatever, eyes.

Just the same, I like nice TRADITIONAL candle-lit pumpkins.

I do use an alternative to candles in my outside jack o'lantern, because of the fire hazzard and because the wind will blow it out, but all in all, when enjoying my JOLs inside the house, it has to be candles. Votive candles are the best, and my local drug store allways has them on sale all through the month of October.

Re: Safest (and possibly coolest!) way to light your pumpkin
I got some pumpkin lights last year for Halloween, and they worked great! Plus, no complaints from my grandma about fires. I didn't get them from the website though, I got them from the local store down the street. They were buy one get one free. Great deal. They're bright enough where you can see them all the way down the street too.
This probably seems crazy, crazy, a graveyard theory,

I've used those for the last few Halloweens, they're awesome.
