Here are some of the creepier sights to behold.

Though you can barely make out bits and pieces of the inscription, this stone clearly marks the grave of an Irish imigrant who lived and died during the Illinois and Michigan canal era.

Here's what I 'm talking about. The gentlman burried under this tomb stone died at the age of 20, in the year 1855, and was originaly from Ireland. It's very likely that he was killed while working on the Illinois & Michigan Canal.

No matter how sentimental I may feel about the Sag, nothing is more spooky or creep then a crypt IMHo. I know of no stories surrounding this or any other crypt in this cemetery, but as I shot this photo, I couldn't help but to feel a sense of forboding about it.

The guy burried in it survived the long journey from Ireland on what were known as "coffin ships" and likely met his demise while trying to eek out a living as a construction worker in the I & M Canal.

Nice bike, too.
And I agree, crypts really get to me. So do haunted-looking trees, which you posted.

when we were on vacation in Iowa we made the rounds to all the graves of my relatives, some are in old graveyards. I always look into the crypts just to see what I can see, one of these old ones I looked into had the marble that covers the tomb broken away in one section and you could see the casket inside. Of course the crypt was all closed and locked but you could still see through the window in the doors....I thought, wow, theres only 3/4 inch of wood between me and that body.......

I would prefer an above-ground tomb just in case, you know, they called my time of death a little too soon.

This is becoming more common here in the States... Handsets get taken to the grave

man what a scary thought.. to be bury alived...

but isn't there like, long embalming processes or something so that at least if they weren't dead before they would be then, you know? god i hope so

I could see being buried alive in a not so advanced country but I dont think it could happen in a more modern country, yes Adrian, with the all the body prep before a burial, it would be almost impossible to bury someone that wasnt dead, but, it did happen in the past. They even made coffins with pull strings and a bell that sat above the grave just in case back in the old days.

OMG bells? i've heard of that!! how creepy!! i think i'll take some of my christmas bells and add them to my grave yard :) maybe some fishing line attached so with one pull all of them can start ringing :)

OOOoooh I shudder to think about being still alive somehow when they started embalming me!
I've actually had a nightmare like that. Tubes leading out of my arm and tubes leading into the other one. The fluid was creeping up slowly, and I couldn't scream! *shivers*

Thanks Beladona. I would really be creaped out if I could actualy see a coffin in a crypt. I really enjoy my visits to the Sag.

As for being burried alive, that's still a very prevelant fear, but the only problem is that when you die, the mortician drans all of your blood and replace it with embalming fluid. SO, if you weren't actualy dead before being embalmed, you most assuredly would be dead after being enbalmed.
