So, this guy Bertram lost his arm in a mining accident and being a good Christian, had it buried so as to rejoin it in heaven.

Well, God has a sense of humor and when the rest of 'Bert' passed on there wasn't room in the cemetary for him, so he is buried miles away.

Local legends abound about the arm clawing it's way out at night looking for it's body.

I wonder if this is the basis for that old horror flick "The Crawling Hand"....

Has anyone talked about re-burying the arm in t'other grave or do people like the stories that go with the arm's grave too much to move it? (Or would it be up to the family, if there are any still living?)

I haven't heard of anything beyond the story of his dual burial.

It would totally take the fun out of the cemetary if they were reunited.

That's a creepy looking place even it it wasn't haunted. I'll have to cruise by there some time when I'm visiting the West Coast.

I think i heard this story when i was younger. It was cool to see a picture of the arm's grave though. I thought my cousin made up the story.

If you do a little digging, most cemetaries have some good stories. Family members passing on under unfortunate, mysterious, or just plain ironic situations.

"My husband drank for years. It was the drink that killed him!"

"Really, I'm so sorry. He was an alcoholic?"

"Oh, no! He was hit by a Guinness truck."

We've got a lot of little cemetaries around here. A lot of pioneer families and trappers and such. We don't have anything as old or cool as some of the historic sites on the east coast or in Europe. Out here in Washington, seeing a tombstone from the mid 1800s is considered really old.

But, there are still a lot of good stories.

There's a cemetery in the Chicago area called Bachelors Grove. There are all kind of stories associated with that cemetery and the forrest preservers around it.
