According to the old Legend of St. Patrick, it was St. Patrick who expeled all the snakes from Ireland. That's a reference to the fact that he was a major factor in Ireland's conversion to the Christian (at that time Catholic) faith. Ireland, like most nations of the earth at that time, was predominantly Peagan.
When the Irish People forsook Peaganism and took up Christianity, it was said that St. Patrick had defeated satan and all of his minions, a.k.a. as snakes. As the years went on, it was said that St. Patrick litteraly expeled and completely rid Ireland of all snakes.
