Whew!
I've been OD-ing on Christmas lately and today felt the need to escape.
I went to Google books and rummaged around in the turn-of-the-last century tomes and found this refreshing article from the absolute height of the Victorian period.

I think I'm going to construct one of the cat lamps described in the opening.
