Re: What you like about Halloween
...yes, it's almost like a funeral, isn't it?
All you that doth my grave pass by,
As you are now so once was I,
As I am now so you must be,
Prepare for death & follow me.

As I am now so you must be,
Prepare for death & follow me.

I was born and raised in Central Florida on the space coast. I moved to East Tennessee when I was in Middle School. My birthday is October, so for me, that first Tennessee October was magical!!! The cool crisp air, the vivid orange and reds in the trees, the almost dreamlike days with crystal blue skys. To me Halloween is a way to remind myself of that wonderful childhood.
I find Halloween a time to cut loose all the adult maturity and bring out the fun, colorful, sometimes tacky creativity in my head. I try to embrace everything wonderful about autumn! I want my kids to love it as much as I do.
I could have Halloween without candy, but not campfires, hayrides, pumpkins or smores.
I also need a few screams and frights for fun!!!

Your story sort of reminds me of my own childhood in Chicato Ill. I grew up in a neighborhood that was originaly a town in and of it'self until it was "anexed" into the city back in the early 1920s. There were plenty of trees and a park, and the leave would turn color in Autumn just like you described. On the corner of 11th and Central Park, was a farm stand that sold all kinds of flowers, landscaping and gardening paraphenilia year round. Late in September, they sold pumpkins and would put them out n display for the customers to come and purchase. After the pumpkins, it was Christmas trees. But one of my fondest childhood memories are of that huge display of pumpkins that were there all through October and late September.

I love the smell of a fresh cut pumpkin. The smell of the corn stalks drying out in my garage. I love horror movies and halloween candles. Adore decorating and getting out the fog machine. Throwing dry ice in the pool and turning the water red. So many things really.
Be afraid....be very afraid!

for me, it's that deliciously spooky smell in the air. the falling leaves, the harvest, the dark forest, the mischievous mood everyone seems to be in, the wonderful neighborhood togetherness, and that undeniable chill you get when you realize this night has been celebrated since the dawning of history!

Re: What you like about Halloween
There just isn't enough you can say about it. Every time of the year has it's special magic, but Halloween is something that people of all ages can enjoy. For some, it's the "gate way" holiday to Thanksgiving and Christmas. For others, it's the one day of the year they can be some ne they're not. For us, it's the most wonderful night of the year.
One of my favorite things about Halloween is that just about anything can be improvised into a halloween decoration or costume. Fireworks, one of my main passions, can also be used as Halloween decorations. Orange smokebombs can be used for Jack O'Lanterns. Firecrackers can be used to scare people. October in general is the last month of any real motorcycling weather in my area, as the transition begins, but it's also the best. If I didn't work at a college, I would take my vacation in October every year.
October and Halloween are something to get excited about, and it makes no difference whether you are 6 or 60.

Good point, Mike.
I'll take your 'last real motorcycling weather' thought one step beyond (ha) and add that it's usually the last real outdoor weather; before we all scurry into our burrows for the dead of winter.
If I may quote Oingo Boingo:
"Let's have a party there's a full moon in the sky.
It's the hour of the wolf and I don't wanna die!"

Re: What you like about Halloween
That's about the size of it, Andy. October is truely the last month of the year before the lousy weather takes over and we're all huddled inside our houses, around the tvs, or in my case the fire place and stereo, waiting for it to be Spring. Of course, I do take the bike out on the few and far-etween nice days in November, December, January and so on, but for the most part, when I go out during the incliment time of the year, it's usualy a movie or other indoor activity.
Last Winter was BRUTAL, to boot. Temps hovering around 0 or below 0, snow every other day, ice everywhere, and in February, I caught the cold to end all colds. Oddly enough, it's during January and February that I mourn October the most.

We go camping the last weekend before Halloween. Our campground has a huge party. It is the last weekend to enjoy nature. The smell of a campfire any time of the year reminds me of that first chill in October.

Candy is all well and good.... but Halloween is about possibilities - anything can happen- that is the magic of season and the holiday - you never know what is around the corner.... plus that time of year - the crisp weather.... GLORIOUS!
