Another cat?

Well...we've already got five cats and I'm concerned about them getting enough attention. I live with my dad and grandmother y'know. And my grandma said no more cats.
But now, my grandma took my aunt's cat to the vet, and I think she figures she "bought" the cat. So now we're getting another one.
It's a beautiful siamese mix, but I remember her being kind of shy. I thought she was joking at first, but evidently we're getting another cat.
I love cats, and I can't possibly say no to another one, but I don't really know how to take this. I'm just concerned about our other cats and how they'll react.

The great thing about cats is they are very independant. As long as you are able to provide food, shelter and vet care; they will be fine. You may want to check your local animal laws. In some states you are only allowed a small number of adult animals.

I could be wroing about this so don't take it as 'gospel,' but I've heard that cats forme groups called "prides," and after 4 or 5 cats have been in a "pride" for a long period of time, they become territorial, like most other animals, and if another cat comes long at a later time, they will not accept that new cat into their "pride."

Tell the truth; your Grandma is really 'Crazy Cat Lady' from the Simpson's, isn't she? :)

I'm with Mike on this one. I have three furry felines in my house. I tried to adopt a 4th (an 8 month old stray), but they wouldn't have it. It's easier for cats to co-exist when they're younger... kittens can be adopted into prides, but older cats generally don't accept other older cats into the pride. Granted, some prides are larger... but my maximum cat level seems to be stuck at 3 for the moment.

Grandma needs to give the cats she does have some lovin'. Despite their independent natures, kitties still need attention-- how else do you figure they master the "Cat always sits on what you're working on" trick?

Actually, it was more like crazy cat man, it was my grandfather who couldn't say no to cats, and my grandmother said up and down "No more!" after grandpa died.
But in the past, the other cats havn't been given much of a choice.
I figured the best thing to do would be to have the cats become familiar with each other's scent first before trying to introduce another cat.
As for giving the other cats attention too, well I told that to my grandmother, so hopefully she'll heed my advice.
Not all of the cats get along anyway. Buddy bullys them. Kitty hates all the other cats.
Typically Tiger, Pinky and Mini get along alright, but every now and then have their scuffles. Mini gets jealous if I let Tiger on my bed, and she lets him know it too! She's not afraid to "speak" her mind about something.
Evidently, she seems to have fallen in love with this young feline. And I hope the cats won't bully her or give her a hard time. I think Tiger will accept her at least...Tiger generally gets along pretty well with others. He's also a bit of a coward and a push over though.
But of course I have no say in the matter. As a cat lover I couldn't say no anyway, and this cat is gorgeous. I just hope she knows what she's doing. I think she's starting to have second thoughts now, but she already said she'd take her, and after paying her vet bills figures she's already bought her.

That reminds me of my younger sister's 3 cats. Brigita was allways the "mean" one. She did not like to socialize, but she liked me for some reason. Maria was the largest physicaly and the most "chicken" of all of them. She was afraid of her own shadow. I also think she was "mentaly challenged." Annie came along about a year later, and she was the youler. She was also the friendliest and most out going of the three.

Out of all three of them, Brigita was still my personal fav. When we all lived with my parents, if I forgot to put food in Brigita's dish before I turned in for the night, she would bite me in the neck at 4 in the morning. But she and I became pretty good friends until I bought my first house.

Maria died about two months ago. Brigita is over 20 years old and is getting nicer in her old age, but Annie still likes to beg at the dinner table and cuddle with anyone.
