Anyone has Diabetes?

Post by Haunt Master » Tue Oct 07, 2008 11:52 pm

I know I have no problem with diabetes, but just curious to hear from all of you or your own family and friends if they do have some kinds of diabetes? If so, then how come they get diabetes? Can they eat anything with salt and sugar? I like to learn more here.

Thanks! :D

HauntMaster, there are two types of diabetes that I know of. I am not familiar with type 1 or "juvinile" diabetes. We had a neighbor who suffered from it. Type 2 diabetes is usualy aquired later in life and can be caused by obeasity, which is my case, or old age. Many a doctor will tell you that if you live long enough, you will become a type 2 diabetic as your pncreas gets older.

Surgary snacks are out of the questions IF you suffer from hyper glycemic or high blood sugar. BUT if your isulin levels are too high, and your blood sugar is too low, that can be just as bad. My brother had a fluxuating blood sugar, and when it would fall too low, he would eat a cookie or something sweet to bring his blood sugar back up to normal. He also suffered the loss of his left foot due ro diabetes, and ultimately he died of an annurism on his heart that also was likely caused by the diabetes. He, too was obease, and his health problems were related to obeasity as are mine. That's why I am working on getting Bariatric surgery. My co worker who had to take 6 insulin shots per day, had it two weeks ago, and now only has to take only on insulin shot per day. As the weight goes down, the blood sugar levels get better, and it's possible that the diabetes can actualy be cured.

If you suspect that you might be having a problem, keep an eye on your weight. If you ar eheavier then you should be, try to lose a few pounds. Regular exercise will help, and if you know some one who owns a clucometer, ask him if you cn check your blood sugar with it. If it's 140 or higher, I would reccomend that you see a doctor. Even if it's in the 130s, you could be "border line." DON'T MESS AROUND WITH IT.

No sodas unless they're diet, iced tea with splenda, no candy with sugar (thankfully Hershey and other companies have been coming out with FANTASTIC tasting sugar free versions of their popular candies, like this Hershey's Dark, Reese's Peanut Butter Cups, York's Peppermint Patties, Andes' Mints, Dove Chocolates, etc. that all taste just like the originals). My aunt, she can have sugar-free amd low-sugar ice cream, sugar free cookies and cakes (Voortman's makes some really good ones).

I try to limit her carb intake from pasta and rice and provide low-carb stuff for her to snack on like nuts and beef jerky. She's lost 30 pounds since finding out she has diabetes.

That's great news, HauntMaster. The closer you can get to a normal weight, the further away you will get from diabetes. If she loses enough weight, she will be able to stop taking her diabetes meds all together, but it's a hard struggle. I have to lose 20 pounds minimum within a 6 month period, or the insurance co won't approve the surgery. I an hoping to up that to 25 or 30 by next March, but before I need to lose a total of 190 pounds before I'll be at a normal weight. If I lose 100 pounds, I should at least be rid of the the diabetes, and I might even be rid of the sleep apnia.

Incidently, they are finding out more and more that soda, diet or regular, is about the worst thing you can put into your body. I am trying to wean myself off soda all together. I'm a Diet Mountain Dew addict. I drink it bedause I can't stand cofee, and I need the cafine. But I am going to have to cut out all cafinated beverages. I've also read some very nasty things about the various artificial sweatners, too. Nutra Sweet, for instance. There are several different kinds, and some of them have been linked to Alsheimers desease, kidney problems, epilepsy and other ailments. So I am trying to get away from the sweets all together. It's not easy, but I'm working on it.
