World War 3

Post by Nostalgiascape » Mon Aug 11, 2008 11:25 pm

Perhaps you've heard mention of it? Some people refer to the end of the world. Now we see everything unraveling on television and the news papers. Irans nuclear facilities. Israel vs Iran. USA vs the whole middle East. China and Russian needing oil from the Middle East. It just seems to be falling apart.

We're living in a world where the media controls our thoughts and emotions. I don't know how many times in the last few years I've heard of some impending doom that just hasn't happened. We've supposedly been "about to go to war" with Iran for a good while now.

And there's always this tension that gets built up between us and China that has never materialized into anything. Israel has skirmishes that fulfiill some kind of Bible prophecy for the end times...and then things go back to normal a couple weeks later. Ever notice how every time things die down there's a new threat or something to be afraid of reported? But how many times has it actually turned into anything?

In the 50's it was the Cold War. In the 70's over population was supposed to wipe everyone out in 20 years. There's so much fear instilled in us on a daily basis. Things aren't any worse now than they have been in the past.

Well unfortunatly without the media, we don't get news at all. Then we're in the dark.

I'm sorry, but I hate how people like to place blame on a single person for something like the economy when it really isn't an appropriate or logical conclusion. Hate the president all you want, but the economy isn't the way it is now because of one man.

Firstly, the president doesn't make decisions, congress does. Congress is presently run by democratic majority. All the President does is ratify or veto bills that CONGRESS approves... and even if he still vetoes a bill, Congress can still approve it with a 2/3 vote. So the president really does very little in direct relation to the economy.

Secondly, some people get confused by saying we're "at war" with Iraq. We're not. There's no official declaration of war, which... you guessed it... also means there are checks and balances on the "warmongering" president. (Warmongering is in quotes because I disagree.) The president doesn't really have as much power as certain people give him. At best, he's an over-glorified figurehead who has the ability and charisma to swing votes one way or another. Very rarely is he directly responsible for making a decision.

Thirdly, the economy is related to many different facets. Gas prices are high because they're shutting down oil refineries in the USA because of the new "going green" trend in the states; this, in conjunction with and as a result of our dependence on oil, has forced us to import oil from overseas. We're paying more because of the "shipping costs". We're also paying elevated prices due to our continued dependence on oil. If we wanted to reduce the cost of oil, all we'd have to do is reduce the DEMAND for oil... but US citizens like their gas-guzzling status symbols and SUV's. Though, we are trending towards hybrids and alternative fuel vehicles... still, those are increasing in price (because of demand) so what more people can afford to drive ends up being oil driven... and the dependence continues. The president has no control over what type of car you drive and how much you drive, does he?

Fourth, the current state of the economy-- prices on food, books, and other commodities-- is more related to inflation than anything. The asking price of items always increases over time. And, with the current increase in minimum wage that CITIZENS VOTED FOR... prices have gone up. Gas station attendants, for example, get paid minimum wage. Gas prices (gas being the most bought item) increase again so the station owners can still make significant profit despite having to pay thousands more a year to their minimum wage employees. In cases where employers can no longer afford to pay employees, they cut staff. If enough people cut staff, people aren't making enough to live under the elevated prices... and the trend continues until it balances.

It can take years to see the effects of decisions... or to see a turn in the economy. Changes that are happening now might be the result of something that happened 4-years go. Changes that happened 8 years ago might be from events that happened +10 years ago. You don't know... but people have to blame SOMEONE, so they point their fingers at the President just because he's a convenient scapegoat. I hardly think that's fair.... especially when the every-day citizen does his or her part to contribute to the country... whether it's driving their car 500-miles a week, voting to increase wages, or refusing to take responsibility for their part in this great machine of a country.

Sorry, but I'm tired of hearing people blame "W" for everything, whether it's his fault or not. He's not the greatest President, but he's not the worst either. Give the guy a break.

Nos- Sorry for taking this somewhere else! I have a whole other rant on how sucky the media is.... =)

My observation is how transparent the media/gov'mnt attempts are.

I blissfully turn off the radio, TV and (gulp!), internet all weekend, every weekend.

During the week I only have time to glance at headlines and still the world keeps on turnin'.

What I do worry about is a pandemic like 1918, but worse because of the increase in population over the last century.

Very true Andy. Whether it be natural disasters or diseases nature can wipe out A LOT of people in a very short amount of time. I remember a couple years back hearing all kinds of things about the bird flu. Luckily that hasn't turned into a pandemic. But you never know what kind of new disease can pop up. Ever heard of Morgellon's?

I can think of two blatant examples of the media's exaggeration of specific events in order to proliferate citizen response. The first, I'm not going to mention because it's a sore spot for a lot of sensitive people. The second would be the more recent (and more applicable) earthquake in LA.

When it was first reported, it was a 5.8. Then they lowered it to 5.4. The media was all over the "devastating earthquake"... Two of my friends live in LA. Both said that it wasn't bad at all. I didn't hear of any reported casualties, but the media kept reporting the fact that there weren't any "yet". The power didn't go down. Buildings and roadways didn't collapse. Yet, it was still a media frenzy.

... and then when a quake happens somewhere in India and whole buildings collapse and kill thousands, it's like, "Oh, some people across the world died." The difference between the two different ways the media reports news between the US and other countries is striking.

As for the 1918 pandemic... and its connection with "avian bird flu"... why even bother worrying? They're still one gene apart (Spanish Flu- 1918- is strain H1N1 and Avian Flu is H5N1), so chances are it's not going to do the same things... and even so the only worry behind Avian Flu is that it is still mutating and scientists don't know exactly what it will be like when it hits.... IF it hits, I should say. The fact that we're even considering it as a threat makes humans more prepared for a "pandemic"... and even though the projected threat is strong, to me, it doesn't make sense to worry. It sounds like scientists are doing what they can to prevent a pandemic... and even if it does mutate and go global, it certainly would thin the population out a little and take care of that "overpopulation issue" the media was in a frenzy about 20-years ago. People worry too much...

Some people are claiming the fight going on in Georgia is the start of World War 3. Good thing I live in Canada and have good protection. I don't wanna be near any of that mess!
Hopefully when America gets a new President, he or she will fix this before it gets out of control.
