Kallie if you have yahoo email, then you are signed up for a yahoo account and should be able to download the messenger easily.

These immature folks can be blocked in more ways than one. You can only recieve messages from people on your list. Removing their name from the list will block them from IMing you.
You can appear Off-Line to each person INDIVIDUALLY. So you can pick & choose who knows you're on-line or not.
You can report the incident(s), and they will loose their IMing privledges.
Besides, if you look just below everyone's post, you can see a few buttons. One of them, is a Yahoo IM service. (Of course, you have to enter your Yahoo screen name in the text field in your PROFILE.) Anyone who has done so, has already made the choice to allow IMing.
Also:
You have to send a request for approval, before you can even start IMing with someone. If anyone knows enough to check out someone else's Y-IM name, (who may have caused problems in the past,) you would know better than to accept their request or not.
