Well, I'm trying to get my house de-cluttered and organized, so I have plenty to keep me busy during the winter!
I also love to read books about gardening and daydream about planting pretty or tasty things.

Re: Beating the winter doldrums
Last year's garden was a complete disaster. Whoever lived here before planted some morning glories that completely took over my garden and killed my tomato and pepper plants. So this year I'm just going to grow flowers, I still have a box of seeds from last year I'm going to try. They are a hummingbird mix, and one of the things I like about spring and summer are those little hummers. They're so fun and fascinating to watch.
I just hope the other kind of "hummer", namely the ones with stingers and of the insect variety stay away. (I'm allergic to bee stings, and I realize bees are necessary for the environment, but I much prefer to see the pretty humming birds. Plus I imagine they would entertain the cats when they look out the window. So they are fun to watch for both the humans and felines in our family. lol)
Don't get me wrong though, the morning glories are pretty, but it's just not a good idea planting them so close to the house like that where they get their seeds everywhere and make such a huge mess with their vines. I must have filled an entire garbage bag full of their dead stems. If planted next to a tree or riverbed, they would be pretty to look at. They provide food for the hummers as well, but they're just too much work to deal with that I rather not deal with it.
I went completely off topic here, but it definitely seems like planning for summer and organizing the house is what is the best thing to do with winter. But I also like to play video games. lol.

Re: Beating the winter doldrums
The hill side below the house I used to live in was over took by sweet pea.
They grow incredibly fast with very little water and can mound up to two or three feet thick.
The flowers are beautiful but when they all die off in the fall the vines dry out and turn brown like some nightmare sagebrush.
We are still having a freakish hot drought.
Today I swept off my patio, shook out the area rug, and clean the furniture off.
Everything is filthy and dusty.
I wore shorts and a t-shirt and was sweating.
I fear that California is going to burst into flames at any moment. I mean the parts that have not already.

All you that doth my grave pass by,
As you are now so once was I,
As I am now so you must be,
Prepare for death & follow me.
