I was reading the top 10 thread and thought about some of the really good but lesser known horror movies. I thoroughly enjoyed "Serpent and the Rainbow" and "Angel Heart" but don't tend see them on any lists. Anybody catch either of these? Also, what off-beat or not so well-known horror movies to people like?

I haven't seen any of those you mentioned. I don't really watch a lot of horror anyway, mainly Halloween type ones or others that appeal to me.

Wasn't Robert De Niro in "Angel Heart?"

I like "Wrong Turn" if that counts. I rarely hear anyone talk about that movie.

"The Lady in White" (1998) - Was a film I remember watching as a kid. Scared me then...

Synopsis: Locked in a school closet during Halloween 1962, young Frank witnesses the ghost of a young girl and the man who murdered her years ago. Shortly afterward he finds himself stalked by the killer and is soon drawn to an old house where a mysterious Lady In White lives. As he discovers the secret of the woman he soon finds that the killer may be someone close to him.

The most terrifying experience my husband and I ever shared in the theater was during the first-run of Wolfen in the early '80s. I guess something psychological was happening to the audience during that show, because there was one point in it where I wasn't sure I could stand to stay there, it was so unsettling, and I did see one person get up and walk out at that point. My husband asked me if I wanted to leave, and I said, "I guess not," and I think the tension diminished after that. But we have never forgotten how terrifying that movie was in the theater that night.

I never hear anyone else talk about Wolfen. It seems to be a forgotten horror film. But it was effective in its day.

I saw Wolfen on disc, very scary. I loved Serpent and the Rainbow and Angel Heart.
I also got lucky and watched The Sentinel and Burnt Offerings with a friend. Both very good!

It's a very cool take on the werewolf genre. I think you'll like it!

Family movies?

I remember an older movie called 'Ghost Story' that was really spooky. All I remember now was that Fred Astaire and the lady who played the Borg queen were in it.

I really liked The Serpent and the Rainbow as well, although the ending didn't do much for me. I have also seen The Lady in White. It has a good Halloween feel to it, but again, didn't care for the ending. I liked Wolfen--both the book and the movie. I think it's kind of in its own class as far as werewolves go because it really is different take on the mythology.

I kind of liked Suspiria and I always watch it on the rare occasion that it happens to be on tv. It's got really eerie music. There are also two foreign horror movies I like called Shiver (Spain) and Them (France). I don't think either one has very good reviews, but they both made me feel very tense and uneasy.

I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one who liked Wolfen. I believe it starred Albert Finney, IIRC. It had a good cast. I have never seen it on VHS/DVD, but perhaps I just haven't looked hard enough. I remember also that they used some NYC neighborhoods to great effect in that film. Back then, some neighborhoods up in NYC looked like they were bomb sites from WWII. I was shocked to see them, not being from that part of the country. I think (hope) those areas have been cleaned up since then, but back in the day, they were extremely effective settings for a horror movie.

I remember Ghost Story being advertised, but I never saw that one. It had a good cast, too, though. I vaguely recall that it was about a group of older men who shared a secret re a crime involving a young girl decades earlier.

A couple of months ago I bought a DVD called The Black Death; did it because Sean Bean (LOTR, Troy, National Treasure) was in it, and I like him. I hadn't heard of it before, but I think it's pretty good. Very dark, though. It is about people seeking out a village of witches in England in 1348, during the plague.
