Tim Burton's Dark Shadows
Okay I only just started watching it. When I am done i'll return to edit and add comments about the film. Now I've only seen the first 19 episodes of the late 60's gothic soap opera when the biggest concern the Collins had was Mr Devlin returning to Collinsport. The rest I have only heard about loosely.
But just let me say this. Any film that starts like this one has, and leads into Victoria Winters train ride from New York to Collinsport Maine to the music Nights in white satin by the Moody Blues, gets an automatic bonus point if nothing else just for epic benning.

I'll be interested to hear your full review. I also liked how it opened, although, for old time DS fans, it was startling not to hear the iconic theme music.

Re: Tim Burton's Dark Shadows
Well, obviously crunching a 6 year soap opera timeline into an hour and a half film means there will have to be some errors when comparing to the original series. The biggest thing that annoyed me was this quandry. Wasn't Maggie Evans a waitress and washed painters daughter in the original series? If so (spoiler) why did writers feel compelled to make Victoria Winters birth name Maggie Evans?
In all I am a fan. Burton rarely lets me down, though as a fan of some history, part of it being Lincoln and the Cival War; I have yet to see Abraham Lincoln Vampire Killer. I think it's sad that we live in a society where we see a fiction about him as a Vampire killer before really seeing a good modern day Bio epic.
But i'm off topic.
Depp pulled off the difficult part of being what other wise is a contradiction; The "Good" Bad Guy. Burton did not put humor over chill and awe so the amount of comedy in it didn't kill it. I enjoyed the film. Of Depps films, this along with Sweeney Todd are two I plan to add to my very selective DVD collection. And Oh yes..Public Enemies as well.

Re: Tim Burton's Dark Shadows
The Maggie Evans/Victoria Winters name thing was an in-joke for the old-time fans. When Barnabas was initially introduced (with the intention of his being a short-term story arc), his object was Maggie Evans. She was the one who physically resembled Josette Dupres, his lost love from another century. In the soap, Maggie was a waitress, but I don't recall her father's being an artist. That was part of the revival series' story line. Maybe he was an artist in the original, too, but I just don't remember that part.
When Barnabas stayed on the show, he needed a new victim, and his attentions turned to Victoria Winters, who was the original "heroine" of the series.
I'm glad you enjoyed the Tim Burton movie. It was vastly different in tone from the original series, but I thought it was enjoyable if taken on its own terms.

Yeah in the original series, Maggie Evans father was a formerly sucessful painter who had become a drunkard over his stress and fear of Dirk Devlins revenge on any whom he believed were responsible for sending him to Prison.

If someone has the hacking skills they can watch something that isn't in theaters yet.

Re: Tim Burton's Dark Shadows
I'm expecting them to release it in October although I've heard nothing. But it seems silly to save it for Christmas. They ought to just release it in time for Halloween.
We certainly intend to buy it. My husband, daughter and I saw it in the theater, and we enjoyed it.

Tim Burton's "Dark Shadows" had an AWESOME sound track. I saw that movie at the Harvest Moon drive-in, and listened to it through my car stereo system. I would crank up the volume every time a song was playing, and people around me would start dancing.
