Poll: 2013 Costumes

So... waaaay back before I got knocked up and had a kid, I decided my 2013 theme for Halloween was going to be "War". I wanted to do an
American Civil War costume... but I couldn't decide on Union or Confederacy... or, heaven forbid, I attempt
one of those big hoop dresses (NOT PINK). (Note: Links will take you to costume patterns that I have on hand.)
My husband wanted to do a WWI Devil Dog (but is having trouble finding the hat).... which made me think about being a WWI Dough Boy... because I'd have a lot of fun sprucing the yard up with fake barbed wire and fake land mines. (I'm actually curious to see if the HoA would write a letter about yard decorations for holidays... lol)
... so last October, we bought a raccoon costume for the minion. Someone suggested we dress as animal control. I thought getting these Dickie's Coveralls ([urlhttp://
www.dickies.com/professions-clothing/pr ... -33999.jsp]link[/url]) would be great for that!
But...
Now I'm torn and can't decide.
Please help! It's already April-- I usually start sewing in February-- and I have an infant! Gah!

So you want advice on which theme to pick?
Since you already have the infant costume (and they outgrow stuff so fast), I think you should build it around that. Animal control would work, if the idea appeals to you.
You can do WWI another year. In fact, won't 2014 mark the 100th anniversary of the beginning of WWI? That would be a great year to do that.

I'd love to do a WWI theme next year... but I alternate themed years with my husband... he gets to choose 2014. After that, "the boy" will probably decide for us... maybe?
Thanks for the helpful points. In the interests of time and money, we're starting to lean more towards animal control as the sole theme this year... I still want to make a big, poofy dress someday!

I like the big "poofy" hoop skirts for civil war themes.

Realistically, he will probably start to choose his own costumes when he is about 4. Up until then, you will be more in control.
WWI lasted until 1918, so its centennial will be going on for a while. You don't have to do it in 2014 to get in on that.

He could be the Doughboy and you could be the influenza pandemic of 1918?

Influenza stricken zombie doughboys? ... Yummy! We could even dress the little guy up as a flying pig for swine "flew"-- Hahaha. Okay... maybe not!

Looks like "Animal Control" is a green for go... my husband got all fired-up, first about the
simple and inexpensive costumes. Then, he got the great idea to
make a net gun. LOL. Of course, then we had to go buy supplies to build the net gun... and, according to my husband, the net gun can be used for other costumes... Gotta love when he gets the Halloween bug early. It ensures I have the props I need to have a great time. Haha. =D

Can you have him build me one? Could have a lot of fun with one of those.
